brocantehome: The True Measure of Happiness

I agree!!! What do these experts expect people to do when its below thirty degrees outside, the windchill is -11 and your couch is the warmest place in the house? They know they are just as guilty as sitting in front of the t.v. on cold winter nights simply to watch one of their favorite 70's sitcoms too ;) I really enjoyed this one!

Hmmm.... in addition to the well-known winter reading (Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott, L.M. Montgomery, Tolkien) I suggest, for cosiness, some C.S. Lewis and Grace Livingston Hill (which is full of vintage housekeeping, incidentally) - perfect to drink tea by!

That's an interesting study. We don't have cable, and only one of our televisions gets any channels (only 3), so we watch television very infrequently. But, we do watch movies on DVD in the evenings a few times throughout the week. I don't even miss cable...well, I did enjoy HGTV and the Food Network, but if I am looking for inspiration, I can find it on-line! :)

It's really not good to be naughty, Alison. Believe me on this.

My new light therapy box was a great investment. Got it on ebay. Am facing a long, dark winter with greater optimism than ever before!

The book idea was a great one for me a couple of years ago. It was actually a new years resolution to change part of my reading habit. I was reading only one kind of writing(romance, e gads!!!) so took it upon myself to read something more interesting. Started reading travles logs, Peter Mayle to start with. Life has been different since. I don't read as much romance as I used too, adding in a bio or a cookbook even. In all fairness, there is not much you can do in the garden in the cold and dark so you do have to do something inside. Maybe go to a large store that is open late just for a walking place. We have indoor shopping malls here in the states that let people do walking when the stores are closed. Playing games, even with your small family is a great way to use some of the time, as opposed to t.v.
Being S.A.D. is not an option!!! use as many !!!! as you will!!! have fun!!!!

I think that this thing about people who "feel indifferent" about what they watch--in other words, who just turn the TV on and sit in front of whatever is on, or who flip from channel to channel just to find something, anything, to sit in front of--is telling. I think that those of us who carefully choose certain, high-quality TV shows and movies, yet don't watch them constantly, are in a different category--as you hinted at, Alison.

Incidentally, I want to like Grace Livingston Hill books. I tried one and found it insipid--couldn't get very far into it at all. Maybe someone could recommend a really good one?
