Oh. My. Gosh. So exciting. So gorgeous. FREE access to all those mags! But, I agree with you, Alison. Surely it isn't quite... right?

Or maybe the publishers themselves are putting mags up on the site, because it means they won't have to print so many copies, but their advertisers are happy because they are getting worldwide exposure on-line. The site tour says that readers can't print out the pages, so I guess that limits what you can do with the content.

I'd like to think that the publishers are in on this, so I'm going to enjoy browsing through back issues of new-to-me mags for ideas!

    Thanks for finding this site!

I like curling up in my favorite chair with a PAPER magazine or novel. Nothing beats that on a cold, rainy, windy night with a cup of tea next to me. I like to see my piles of magazines where I can pick and choose and flip through them at will and at random. You just can't do that online. And when the pc is slow....forget it! That's when I want to pick it up and smash it. I don't think I've ever had the desire to smash a magazine! ;-) I think online sources are a good "tool" like anything we can research online, but I don't think they'll ever replace good old paper magazines and novels, etc. Just like online shopping will never totally replace the tactile, visual and smelling joy of walking into a real store. You can't smell those exotic perfumes, spices and potpourris online, can't feel the silk and velvet and lace....
    You get my point! ;-)

I love the idea of this...I have such an accumulation of magazines here at home. This is a good opportunity to 'flip' through a few different ones. Thanks for the tip!

As a struggling, barely surviving independently-owned magazine publisher with 10+ employees - this is stealing. No gray area - stealing - we sell digital subscriptions--heck, we give away a free one so you can check it out - but why bother paying us at all when you can upload our magazine to the internet without compensation to the people who created the publication?

It's not so "fun" when it happens to something *you* and your team have put everything on the line to publish . . .suppose someone took "Brocante" and printed it out for sale?

The publishing industry has taken hit after hit in the last few years. This is stealing revenue from someone - whether it's a giant corporation like Conde Nast or a little publisher like those of us who struggle to put out 40,000 copies of a single title - it's stealing. And we'll have to have our trademark attorney involved for thousands of dollars (more lost money), and all Mygazines will have to do is pull the magazine down and say "not responsible" . . . Stealing!

Lordy! it seems a bit like those sites for downloading music, which are apparently being knocked on the head soon,I guess its a good idea to check out magazines that you may like to try,but I love buying my magazines and waiting until I am alone, relaxed and stretched out on the sofa with a frothy coffee and a biscuit or two! Heaven!

I think the site is wonderful. It will not replace any of the magazines I subscribe to but a great way to check out a magazine I haven't purchased before and or ones I don't want to purchase for one reason or another. Just wish they had the British Edition of Country Living. :(

Oh dear - as a librarian I do regard this as SEVERE copyright infringement! - If I caught anyone doing that I'd be duty bound to report them not only to the Academic committee, but also to the Copyright Liscencing Agency. Not good - I think they'll probably be shut down sharpish. I do think the publishers need to think more seriously about the amount of craft periodicals that could be published online though... it works for the Academic community and for online books - why not think about it for other areas of publishing...

    Illegal. Period.

I think the copyright is infringed only if you print off the magazines, like lisining to music is fine it's downloading that's the problem. As someone on a bit of a budget this is a real treat for me to be able to see all the different magazine from all over the world Thanks Sophie x

I like Mygazines for the magazines I wouldn't normally buy, but I still buy paper copies of my favorites, and save my favorite articles/photos in a scrapbook, recycling the rest!

huh, my guess is that these are all mags that offer a pdf download of their mags on their web sites, & mygazines is pulling from that.

Since bloggers have been warned not to scan even a few pages for their blogs from their fave mags.... I think this is very illegal. Only a matter of time before it goes the way of Napster I think.... I hope those who browse don't get the fines some do for downloading music????? Ouch....

I'm not sure how this is any different from buying a cup of coffee at Barnes & Noble and grabbing a stack of magazines to look through in the coffee shop - I certainly wouldn't subscribe to anything I haven't looked through; perhaps this is a blessing in disguise for magazine publishers.

Heidi, i couldn't have said it better - totally agree with you. This site is awesome. period.

I think is bloody genius and that although perhaps not quite legal, I am willing to bet that the publishers are in the know and that they are hoping that it will serve as a method of advertising for them. Think about it: someone goes online and reads the magazine. They decide that wow, its a great magazine and want article X or picture Y so they go out and purchase it for their own collection.

This was actually my first introduction to mygazines, and while I think the concept is good and great for research, it's firmly in the "optional addition", not "option, full stop" category.

The reason is simple - I look forward to carving out a quiet hour or two where my world is reduced to my couch, a cup of tea or two, and a stack of reading material quietly waiting to give up its treasures...

Another good site for free web magazines is www.digi-zines.com. These ones are legal.
